Gaming regulators discuss President Casino's fate

March 10th, 2010

Pinnacle Entertainment has agreed to surrender its gaming license for the President Casino, and the Missouri Gaming Commission voted this morning to accept the action.

The commission will announce further details this morning.

The Missouri Gaming Commission immediately went into closed session at its public meeting today, after saying that Pinnacle Entertainment has proposed a settlement regarding the fate of the President Casino.

The President Casino was the only item on the commission’s agenda for the meeting, being held this morning at the Four Seasons at Lumiere Place, 999 N. Second St. Pinnacle had requested that the meeting be held at Lumiere Place, another of its local gaming properties.

Last week, the President’s owner, Las Vegas-based Pinnacle Entertainment, won the latest round in its ongoing fight with the gaming commission over the struggling President. the Missouri Court of Appeals reversed a commission resolution issued last August that concluded Pinnacle may not repair, replace or relocate the aging Admiral riverboat — which hosts the President — without a new gambling license.

Pinnacle (NYSE: PNK) had argued the decision effectively revoked the President’s license without a proper hearing. the casino owner filed a request in September for judicial review of the commission’s decision.

Check back for updates.

Slight chance of showers today for Las Vegas

March 10th, 2010

Wednesday, March 10, 2010 | 4:48 a.m.

More cool, cloudy and possibly wet weather is heading into the Las Vegas Valley today, according to the National Weather Service.

A cold low pressure system will move south through eastern Nevada today and head into Arizona tonight, bringing a slight chance of showers to the area today, the weather service said.

Forecasters said high pressure would then briefly build over the region, bringing dry and warm weather Thursday and Friday before another storm system arrives Saturday.

At 4:56 a.m., the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 47 degrees. The normal morning low for today’s date is 46 degrees and the record low was 29 degrees, set in 1962.

Around the valley just before 5 a.m., temperatures were 45 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 43 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 41 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures will be 46 degrees by 9 a.m., climb to 54 degrees by noon and reach a high of 60 degrees by 3 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today’s date is 68 degrees and the record high is 29 degrees, set in 1962.

Tonight, temperatures will fall to 55 degrees by 6 p.m., to 51 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 48 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Thursday’s morning low will be 42 degrees and Thursday’s high will be 63 degrees.

But Tuesday in Justice Court, Harris was absent when Senior Judge Joseph Bonaventure Sr. called his name.

“Well, I don’t know where he is,” Bonaventure said. “Maybe it was a mistake from the jail.”

But it was no mistake: Harris, 27, had posted bail on Sunday, less than 24 hours after arriving at Clark County Detention Center. A bench warrant for Harris was not issued Monday because of confusion on the court calendar regarding his warrant hearing. the case will be heard today.

Harris was arrested in Chicago in February and was being held without bail, but when he arrived in Las Vegas, Justice of the Peace Tony Abbatangelo set bail at $7,500 without consulting prosecutors.

“The state is surprised at the $7,500 bail setting, especially when the state was never contacted to give any input on what the appropriate bail setting should be,” Deputy District Attorney Sam Bateman said.

Harris is the suspect in a shooting that occurred about 10 p.m. on Aug. 23 outside the Crystal Palace Skating Center on Boulder Highway, north of Flamingo Road.

Two men in a vehicle, Quincey Williams, 25, and Damein Bland, 36, reported being shot at while leaving the parking lot after a confrontation with Mayweather in which the boxer threatened Williams over a text message he’d sent a few months earlier. No one was injured in the shooting.

Mayweather told Williams, “Do you know who I am? I could have you trumped,” an arrest report said.

Williams and Bland told police the shooter was a Mayweather employee named “O.C.” who was the boxer’s bodyguard.

More than 30 witnesses were interviewed in the investigation.

“While most of the witnesses did not observe all the events that led to the shooting, they all collectively told a story which was consistent with that of both victims,” the report said.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Roy Nelson said it’s frustrating to build a case, arrest a suspect in another state, extradite the suspect back to Nevada and then see the suspect given bail without a hearing.

Nelson said charges as serious as the ones Harris is facing — attempted murder with a deadly weapon and assault with a deadly weapon — generally bring a high bail amount.

The amount is usually around $100,000, prosecutors said, and a suspect can be held without bail, especially if he is a flight risk.

“He’s already shown he’s a flight risk, but here we are, on a Saturday, giving him bail. and he’s already out,” Nelson said.

“Bail is usually set in court, and for a charge like this, it’s usually a heck of a lot more than that ($7,500),” he said.

Why Abbatangelo set bail is unknown. Messages left at his office were not returned.

Harris’ lawyer, Tom Pitaro, said he’ll answer bail questions in court today.

Pitaro was asked if he requested a bail reduction from a judge, despite the fact the state had asked no bail be set pending the warrant hearing.

“The Constitution doesn’t say he can’t (receive bail), does it?” he said, adding that the charges Harris face do not prohibit bail. “If that’s going to be an issue I’d rather make my arguments to the court.”

The relationship between Abbatangelo and Pitaro has not always been judge-counselor; it was once defendant-lawyer.

Pitaro was Abbatangelo’s attorney during Abbatangelo’s domestic violence case in 2008 and 2009.

Abbatangelo was accused of attacking his wife at the couple’s home in November 2008. his wife of 13 years told authorities that he grabbed her by the neck, choked her and screamed at her during a fight.

He was sentenced to spend two days in jail after he pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor battery domestic violence.

Pitaro did not respond to later calls seeking comment about his relationship with Abbatangelo.

There have been few official statements regarding Mayweather’s involvement with Harris. Mayweather is not a suspect in the investigation.

The boxer told police he was at the skating rink the night of the shooting but “didn’t know an Ocie and was unaware of any shooting,” a police report said.

But when police searched Mayweather’s Southern Highlands home, they recovered surveillance footage from hiss security gate that showed Harris at the residence on four separate occasions before the shooting, the report said.

A representative for Mayweather did not answer calls seeking comment Tuesday.

Nelson said Harris’ bail was paid by Chicago resident Nate Jones. Police have confirmed that Jones is a former Olympic boxing teammate of Mayweather’s, and currently works with Mayweather as a trainer in Las Vegas.

Bail will likely be discussed in public today, when attorneys meet before Bonaventure for the warrant hearing.

Nelson said it’s possible Bonaventure could revoke bail, but he could defer to Abbatangelo, who was absent Tuesday but is the sitting judge in this case.

Lt. George Castro, who oversaw the investigation into Harris, said it was unfortunate detectives were not given a chance to question Harris about the case before bail was set, but he remains certain police have presented a strong case to the district attorney.

“We can’t worry about parts we can’t control,” he said.

MAYWEATHER’S UNCLE GETS ONE FELONY CHARGE DROPPED

A district judge Tuesday dropped one of three felony charges against the uncle of famed champion boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Roger Mayweather still faces one count each of battery with substantial bodily harm and battery after being accused of choking a former female trainee.

The 48-year-old has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Judge Valerie Adair agreed with defense attorney Jack Buchanan that prosecutors did not present enough evidence during a preliminary hearing to support a charge of coercion against the defendant, according to court records.

Authorities allege Roger Mayweather choked and punched 26-year-old fighter Melissa St. Vil on Aug. 2 at her apartment in the 700 block of Rock Springs Drive, near Rainbow Boulevard and Washington Avenue.

Roger Mayweather owned the property and rented it out to a man who was letting St. Vil live there.

Prior to the incident, St. Vil had trained under Roger Mayweather until May when she left for a new trainer.

Authorities allege Roger Mayweather was upset that St. Vil was still living at his property. He allegedly confronted her and a physical altercation took place.

He remains out of jail on $13,000 bail. A trial date was set for Aug. 2.

MLB Betting not waiting for opening day

March 10th, 2010

The cry of “Play ball” won’t be heard around MLB ballparks for a while but Major League Baseball betting enthusiasts need not wait until opening day, April 4, to get some action on the upcoming season.

Most sportsbooks already have numerous future book and wagering propositions available to their clientele, including one on the ultimate prize, which team will win the 2010 World Series. Not surprisingly, the defending champion Yankees are the favorite in that category at odds of 7/2 and the team they beat in the World Series, the Phillies, are the second choice at odds of 6/1. the Red Sox, who picked up former Angel John Lackey in the off-season to solidify the best starting rotation in baseball, are close behind at odds of 7/1.

It’s double digits on every other team with the Cardinals, Dodgers, Angels and Rockies all around 15/1 with escalating prices after that. If you turn World Series futures upside down you’ll see the Nationals and Pirates as high as 250/1 each and the Orioles, Blue Jays, Padres, Royals, Astros and Indians all offered at odds of 100/1 or more.

New York, Philadelphia and Boston are judged so superior to other teams in MLB that there are props involving all three against the field. for example, you can take 7/2 that the Yankees win the World Series or opt for 1/5 that any of the other 29 teams in the League wins the October classic. you lay 4/9 that either the Yanks or Phillies win it all or take 2/1 that one of MLB’s other 28 teams accomplishes the task. Finally, you get odds of 2/1 that either the Yankees or Red Sox win the World Series or lay 2/5 that it’s a different team.

In addition to World Series futures, sportsbooks also are offering odds on each pennant and the League’s six divisions. the Yankees and Red Sox dominate the American League pennant future book race at respective odds of 3/2 and 7/2 while the Phillies are a 3/1 favorite to win the National League flag ahead of St. Louis (11/2), Los Angeles (13/2) and Colorado (8/1).

As for division future books, it’s New York (11/13) and Boston (9/4) vying for top honors in the American League East. Minnesota (7/5) is in a tight race with Chicago (12/5) and Detroit (9/2) in the AL Central Division while Los Angeles (9/5) holds the future book betting edge over Texas (5/2), Seattle (3/1) and Oakland (8/1) in the competitive AL West Division.

At odds of 1/2, Philadelphia is expected to dominate the NL East, with Atlanta (4/1) and New York (6/1) hoping to spring an upset. St. Louis (4/7) is being chased by Chicago (7/2), Cincinnati (7/1) and Milwaukee (9/1) in the NL Central while four teams, LA (2/1), Colorado (5/2), San Francisco (4/1) and Arizona (5/1) seemingly have a legitimate chance in the contentious NL West Division.

No sport is as steeped in numbers as baseball, and sportsbooks have taken advantage of this penchant for record-keeping by offering a series of betting propositions based on statistical achievement.

In fact, there are over/under totals for nearly every category. for instance, lay -115 (bet $115 to win $100) either way that Major League Baseball’s home run king hits more or fewer than 46 1/2 round trippers this season. the total for most base hits is 220 1/2 but you have to lay -135 on the under or take +105 (bet $100 to win $105) on the over. Lay -175 that no one will hit over .355 or take +135 that someone will.

You also can lay -115 either way on any team losing more than 101 1/2 games or get the same odds on the strikeout leader notching over or under 258 1/2 whiffs. It’s also -115 either way that a pitcher loses over 16 1/2 games but you’ll have lay -125 on a pitcher winning more than 20 1/2 games (or take -105) the other way. There are similar total bets offered on steals (64 1/2), RBI (144 1/2) and saves 47 1/2). Pick your poison.

The start of Major League Baseball may still be a bit in the distance but Major League Baseball betting already is underway.

Harrah's to Extend $5.5 Billion CMBS Loan Maturities (Correct)

March 9th, 2010

March 08, 2010, 6:07 PM EST

(Corrects CMBS securitization status in second paragraph of story published March 7.)

March 7 (Bloomberg) — Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. said lenders agreed to extend $5.5 billion of maturities to 2015, giving the world’s biggest casino company five years for an economic recovery before it has to make any material repayments. company five years to make any material repayments.

Harrah’s got unanimous consent to push back repayments on loans that were set up to be packaged and sold as commercial mortgage-backed securities, the Las Vegas-based company said in a statement. Harrah’s can repurchase the loans, which cover six casinos, at a discount under the amendments. The loans were never placed into securitizations, Bloomberg data show.

The agreement buys Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gary Loveman time to reduce debt as he works to boost earnings in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, where a record two-year slump lingers. since Leon Black’s Apollo Management LP and TPG Inc. took the company private in January 2008, the owner of Caesars Palace and Paris casinos has cut $4.2 billion in debt by twice offering creditors new notes with later maturities for lesser principal.

“We now have basically five years with no material maturities,” Chief Financial Officer Jonathan Halkyard said today in a phone interview. “We obviously don’t know how quickly the economy rebounds, and given that uncertainty it’s critical we have plenty of time for that to play out.”

Harrah’s agreed to buy back $124 million face-value CMBS loans for $37 million under this latest amendment, and will pay lenders another $48 million for $950 million of loans it had previously acquired at a discounted price of $237 million. The amendments are subject to final documentation.

The company now has about $385 million debt repayments due through 2011, Halkyard said. The company’s $1.63 billion revolving credit facility matures in January 2014, Bloomberg data show.

The extended CMBS loans had been due to mature in early 2013. The six mortgages are on Las Vegas resorts Paris, Rio, Harrah’s, and Flamingo, and Harrah’s-branded casinos in Atlantic City and Laughlin, Nevada, Halkyard said.

Apollo Management and TPG took Harrah’s private for $30.7 billion including debt and transaction costs, just as the recession hurt the company’s biggest gambling and resort markets.

Harrah’s had $19.3 billion long-term debt as of Sept. 30, regulatory filings show.

Minutemen win first A-10 tournament game since 2002

March 9th, 2010

The drought is now over.

Jeff Bernstein / Collegian

For the first time in eight seasons, the Massachusetts men’s basketball team defeated an opponent in the Atlantic 10 tournament, as the Minutemen (12-19, 5-11 A-10) upset Charlotte on Tuesday night, 59-56, at Halton Arena.

Eleventh-seeded UMass will now head to Atlantic City to take on No. 3 Richmond on Friday night at 9 p.m.

“It was a hard fought game by our players,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “It’s about the team and players, it’s about Ricky [Harris] playing the way he has down the stretch.”

Harris led all scorers with 24 points, including hitting his first four shots of the game, going 5-of-13 from the field and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line.

“It’s a great feeling right now,” Harris said. “It’s a great win in a hostile environment against a great team that is well coached, and the win on the road is big for us. Now, we have to take it to Atlantic City, and hopefully carry it over.”

While Harris led the game in scoring, the Minutemen won on the defensive side of the floor, as they caused the sixth-seeded 49ers (19-12, 9-7 A-10) into shooting 35 percent in the second half and 37 percent for the game, while causing five turnovers.

“That’s the thing I’ve been preaching all year, and I didn’t think we played well on the offensive end, but we grinded it out,” Kellogg said of his team’s defensive performance. “It’s been a long time coming, but we toughed it out for a win and made some plays down the stretch.”

UMass shot 32 percent from the field and went 7-of-32 from 3-point range, but converted from the free-throw line with 18-of-22 shots.

With the loss, the 49ers will be hard pressed to make the NCAA tournament, losing seven of their last eight games.

The Minutemen were up one when freshman Javorn Farrell blocked a shot from Derrio Green against the backboard, causing a jump ball in the possession of UMass with just under a minute and a half left in regulation.

Freshman forward Terrell Vinson then hit a jumper to give the Minutemen a 54-51 lead with 50 seconds left.

The 49ers called a timeout and went on to the court with six players, resulting in a technical foul, with Harris making both free throws to put the Minutemen up five.

A quick 3 by Gokhan Sirin cut the 49er deficit to two with 46 seconds to play, but Harris again hit two more free throws to put UMass up 58-54.

After a quick Charlotte basket, Vinson hit one of two free throws, and Hashim Bailey grabbed the rebound to seal the victory after a one-and-one miss from DiJuan Harris.

Along with Harris, Sean Carter added seven points and seven rebounds, while Terrell Vinson and Bailey both added six points in the victory.

Freshman Freddie Riley added a 3-pointer, while Farrell added five points and four assists.

“It’s unbelievable, and it’s a pleasure to watch them,” Harris said of his young teammates. “I wish I had another year, because next year they will be a good team with well-rounded individuals.”

The 49ers were led by An’Juan Wilderness (11 pts) and Ian Andersen (10 pts), while Shamari Spears and Phil Jones each had eight.

UMass fell to the 49ers 72-58 back on Jan. 30, and lost to the Spiders 70-63 in an overtime contest on Jan. 13.

In 2008, the third-seeded Minutemen fell to the sixth-seeded 49ers, 69-65, in the the A-10 quarterfinals, after earning a first round bye.

“We have good kids, and when things aren’t going well, they work hard and persevere, they have tremendous attitudes and have stayed up beat,” Kellogg said.

That optimism has brought UMass back to Atlantic City for the second time this season, not for the Legends Classic it played earlier this year, but a shot at the A-10 title.

Is online gambling a good bet for Florida?

March 9th, 2010

TAMPA, FL — Online casinos are based in Antigua, the United Kingdom, and the British Isles, pretty much anywhere you can think of except for the United States.

They generate billions of dollars a year, but they are illegal in the U.S. and some say states, including Florida, are missing out on a major pay day.

One Florida lawmaker says Florida is holding a losing hand.

“This legislation is important to make sure the state receives its fair share of the online poker play that is currently taking place overseas,” says Representative Joseph Abruzzo (D-Wellington). He filed a bill in Tallahassee to legalize and regulate online gambling in Florida. It’s first bill of its kind filed in the country this year.

Abruzzo estimates if Florida sanctioned online gambling sites, the state could rake in $600,000 a day, or $200 million a year. He also thinks it will make online gambling safer.

“We currently have the technology where if a player bets too much or bets too many times we can cut them off,” Abruzzo says.

Abruzzo claims some of the overseas operations actually rig their games, stacking the deck against players.

So how can they regulate this under his bill? The new Florida based online gambling sites pay for the technology to monitor fair play through their license fees. To gain a license, hub operators would be chosen by the state.

Marie Osmond Back to Las Vegas After Burying Son

March 9th, 2010

Although having a rough time coping with her son’s death, the singer is considering other factors like her other kids and the show’s crew.

Marie Osmond did not take too much time grieving, coming back to the Las Vegas stage just one day after son’s funeral. The Osmond family held the funeral Monday, March 8 for Michael Bryan in Provo, Utah and Marie was back on the mill on Tuesday night. “She’s having a rough time, but she’s staying strong,” the show’s producer Chip Lightman told E! News. “She has seven other children that depend on her, and she’s being strong for the kids.”

All the 720 tickets were sold for the show. It is not known however, whether Marie will address Michael’s death though there are several ad-lib sessions during the 90 minutes show. “Nothing has been prescripted, but I think she is going to see how she feels,” Lightman added. “Marie is the kind of person who goes with the moment. If she feels that she needs to, she will.”

Not only coming back early, Marie has also added extra dates to replace the canceled shows following Michael’s death. The five extra shows are from April 13 to 17. “She’s going back to work because it affects a lot of people when she doesn’t work,” Lightman said. “There’s over 100 people who work on the show, and Marie never wants to let people down so she’s going back to work tonight.”

Michael Bryan died on February 26 in Los Angeles from apparent suicide by jumping from his apartment’s eighth floor. a friend of him received a last note where he stated he was unhappy and that she’s his only friend. An official cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy and toxicology tests.

March Madness Odds – Bulls looking to gore Blue Demons

March 9th, 2010

Mar 8th, 2010

It’s almost MarchMadness betting time, and sports betting players can get somepractice in as the conference tournaments will begin on Tuesday, heading intoSelection Sunday when the field of 64 for the NCAA Tournament will be set, prior to the play-in game. South Florida kept their dreams of the big dancealive with a late-season three-game winning streak, and they’ll try to keep itgoing when they face lowly DePaul in the first round of the big East tournamentat Madison Square Garden.

South Florida vs DePaul odds – Tuesday, March 9, 2:00 PM ET

The Bulls (19-11, 9-9) dropped UConn75-68 at home in a battle of the bubble teams, and South Florida shot 50.9%from the floor. Dominique Jones was 7-of-12 from the field to lead the way with20 points for the Bulls, who didn’t take many three-pointers (six), but madethe most of them (four). the Bulls also got 17 points off the bench fromAugustus Gilchrist, who not only has one of the best names in the country, buthe’ll also be a big man to watch in the big East next season after two verygood years on campus.

The Blue Demons (8-22, 1-17) head into this game on a12-game losing skid, but at least they’re not giving up: during those 12 games, only two of those losses have been by more than 10 points. Their finaleresulted in a 90-82 loss at home to St. John’s in triple overtime, and theylost a 16-point halftime lead before fading in the last period of extra time.Mac Koshwal had 23 points and 10 boards to lead theBlue Demons, who hit 12 of their 28 three-point attempts, but they went to thefoul line 22 fewer times than the Red Storm, and that was the difference.

The Bulls will definitely be favored in your gambling software, and a 63-59 win at DePaul on March 2ndwas their third straight over the Blue Demons. Jones scored 20 points for theBulls, while Koshwal added 24 points and 11 boardsfor the Blue Demons as neither team shot better than 38.5% from the floor. Thatgame was won for South Florida on the boards as they outrebounded the BlueDemons 39-27, including 14-6 on the offensive glass, and those second chanceshelped the Bulls through their shooting slump. the Blue Demons will be betternext year, but the Bulls are on a roll right now and they know that they canclinch a spot in the big dance. meanwhile, DePaul would probably have to beateveryone in the big East tournament by 20, and they still wouldn’t make it intothe Tournament.
